The B-Love Foundation was created in honor of a beloved family member and friend, Barry Schmidt, who passed away in April 2018. Barry embodied kindness, joy, and generosity. His deep love for sports as a child and his unwavering desire to uplift others, especially young people in his community, serve as the foundation and inspiration for our mission.
Barry grew up in Calvert County, where he played T-ball, baseball, and football, proudly representing the Prince Frederick Astros and the Eagles. These early experiences shaped his love for teamwork and community and helped instill the values that guided him throughout his life.
Barry also discovered his calling early. Long before becoming a professional barber, he was known for cutting his friends hair in high school. What started as a simple way to help others quickly grew into a true passion. With dedication and heart, Barry spent more than 20 years in the barbering profession and became known not only for his talent but for the genuine warmth, humor, and encouragement he shared with every person who sat in his chair.
In 2003, Barry and his younger brother Bradley fulfilled a shared dream by opening SKILLS Barbershop in Owings, Maryland. The shop quickly became more than a business. It became a gathering place filled with laughter, friendship, mentoring, and community connection. Today, SKILLS, now located at the Rod N Reel Resort in Chesapeake Beach, remains one of the most cherished barbershops in the region. People still visit not only for a haircut but to experience the welcoming environment Barry and Bradley created, an atmosphere that Bradley continues to carry forward every day.
To many, Barry will always be “B Love,” his DJ name and a reflection of how he approached life. Music inspired him and energized him, and he loved sharing that creative spirit with others. His love for people, for life, and for spreading joy lives on in the countless individuals he touched and continues through this foundation.
To honor Barry’s legacy, The B-Love Foundation is committed to supporting youth sports and extracurricular opportunities. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow, compete, dream, and discover their strengths regardless of financial circumstance. Participation in sports and activities helps young people develop responsibility, confidence, teamwork, time-management skills, and friendships that last a lifetime.
Barry believed in giving others a chance to belong, to succeed, and to become their best selves. We are humbled and proud to carry his mission forward.
